RESUMO

Freshwater megafish species, such as sturgeons, salmonids, carps, and catfishes, have a maximum reported weight ≥30 kg. Due to their charisma and economic value, they have been widely introduced outside of their native ranges. Here, we provide a comprehensive overview of the introduction of freshwater megafish and an assessment of their environmental impacts. Of the 134 extant freshwater megafish species, 46% have been introduced to new environments, and of these, 69% have established self-sustaining alien populations. These introductions affect 59% of the world's main basins, with the USA and western Europe being particular hotspots of megafish introductions. The common carp (Cyprinus carpio) is the most widely introduced species. Using the Environmental Impact Classification for Alien Taxa (EICAT and EICAT+) frameworks, we assessed the severity and type of negative and positive impacts posed by alien megafish on native species. Alien megafish caused negative impacts through nine different mechanisms, with predation being the most frequently reported mechanism, followed by herbivory and competition. Moreover, 58% of the alien megafish species with sufficient data to evaluate the severity of their impacts caused declining populations of native species, or worse, extirpations of native species populations. The positive environmental impacts of alien megafish were far less frequently documented. They include biotic interactions that benefit native species, and the provision of trophic resources or habitats. Widely introduced or extensively studied species are more likely to have documented severe impacts on native species. There is a clear trade-off between the economic benefits associated with megafish introductions and the severe adverse impacts they have on native biodiversity. Our study highlights the need for comprehensive risk assessments to evaluate the potential environmental impacts of megafish. More research and long-term monitoring schemes are required to inform management actions to protect biodiversity, particularly in the Global South.

Alternative lengthening of telomeres (ALT) is a telomerase-independent and recombination-based mechanism used by approximately 15% of human cancers to maintain telomere length and to sustain proliferation. ALT-positive cells display unique features that could be exploited for tailored cancer therapies. A key limitation for the development of ALT-specific treatments is the lack of an assay to detect ALT-positive cells that is easy to perform and that can be scaled up. One of the most broadly used assays for ALT detection, CCA (C-circle assay), does not provide single-cell information and it is not amenable to High-Throughput Screening (HTS). To overcome these limitations, we developed Native-FISH (N-FISH) as an alternative method to visualize ALT-specific single-stranded telomeric DNA. N-FISH produces single-cell data, can be applied to fixed tissues, does not require DNA isolation or amplification steps, and it can be miniaturized in a 384-well format. This protocol details the steps to perform N-FISH protocol both in a low- and high-throughput format to analyze ALT. While low-throughput N-FISH is useful to assay the ALT state of cell lines, we expect that the miniaturized N-FISH assay coupled with high-throughput imaging will be useful in functional genomics and chemical screens to identify novel cellular factors that regulate ALT and potential ALT therapeutic targets for cancer therapies directed against ALT-positive tumors, respectively.

Populations of the non-native Asian shore crab, Hemigrapsus sanguineus, now dominate the rocky intertidal of southern New England, USA. High abundances suggest the recent invader may have experienced enhanced success as a result of enemy release. While larvae and juveniles may serve as a food source for ecologically important species, little is known about predation of mature H. sanguineus or the influence of habitat on predation pressure. To assess natural predation rates of adult H. sanguineus, crabs were tethered in the intertidal at Clarks Cove in New Bedford, MA. Crabs were left in situ for half of a tidal cycle then observed for signs of predation. Results of separate high and low tide trials showed that adult crabs were preyed upon at both high and low tide, though at a significantly higher rate during high tide during both daytime and nighttime, suggesting predation by aquatic species is greater than that by terrestrial species. To investigate the role of habitat as refuge from predation, a laboratory experiment manipulated the complexity of habitat provided to crabs in the presence of a native fish predator. Results indicate better refuge is provided by more complex shelter. Together, findings suggest that fish, crabs, and/or diving birds are important predators for H. sanguineus in the invaded range and that habitat refuge acts to reduce predation pressure.

This study aimed to examine the prevalence of Ichthyophthirius multifiliis in fish inhabiting natural water bodies in the Lhasa and Nagqu regions of Tibet in September 2020 and August 2021. The results showed that Schizopygopsis selincuoensis had the highest prevalence of I. multifiliis at 33.73% (56/166), followed by Triplophysa tibetana at 30.00% (6/20), Triplophysa brevicauda at 27.91% (12/43) and Schizopygopsis thermalis at 23.66% (31/131). No infection with I. multifiliis was observed in exotic fish species. In addition, the prevalence of I. multifiliis in Boqu Zangbo (river), Selincuo Lake and Cuona Lake in the Nagqu region was found to be significantly higher than that in Lalu Wetland and Chabalang Wetland in the Lhasa region (P < 0.05). The study revealed a significantly lower prevalence in Lhasa River than in Cuona Lake (P < 0.05). Notably, our findings revealed instances of I. multifiliis infections even in saline water bodies, thereby emphasizing the potential threat that this parasite poses to the preservation of indigenous fish resources in Tibet. Consequently, immediate and effective countermeasures are imperative. This study represents the first systematic investigation of I. multifiliis infection in natural water bodies in Tibet.

Salmonids were first introduced into the Chilean fresh waters in the 1880s, and c. 140 years later, they are ubiquitous across Chilean rivers, especially in the southern pristine fresh waters. This study examined the brown trout (Salmo trutta) and native taxa ecology in two adjacent but contrasting rivers of Chilean Patagonia. During spring 2016 and spring-fall 2017 we examined the variation in benthic macroinvertebrate and fish community composition and characterized fish size structure, stomach contents, and stable isotopes (δ13 C and δ15 N) to understand population structure, fish diet, and trophic interactions between S. trutta and native taxa. The native Galaxias maculatus (puye) dominated the fish community (74% of abundance). S. trutta was less abundant (16% of survey catch) but dominated the fish community (over 53%) in terms of biomass. S. trutta showed distinct diets (stomach content analysis) in the two rivers, and individuals from the larger river were notably more piscivorous, consuming native fish with a relatively small body size (<100-mm total length). Native fishes were isotopically distinct from S. trutta, which showed a wider isotopic niche in the smaller river, indicating that their trophic role was more variable than in the larger river (piscivorous). This study provides data from the unstudied pristine coastal rivers in Patagonia and reveals that interactions between native and introduced species can vary at very local spatial scales.

Background: The Temengor Reservoir is the second largest reservoir in Peninsular Malaysia. Located in the northwestern state of Perak, it was selected to develop a large-scale tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) aquaculture facility within the Aquaculture Industrial Zone (AIZ) in 2008 due to its favourable environmental conditions. No record of tilapia has ever been reported in the natural waters prior to this. However, a post-establishment study recorded tilapia sightings in the natural waters of this lake. The cultured tilapia was easily recognizable with the elongated mouth and body, and long caudal fin. It is postulated that these were escapees from the floating cages that had invaded the natural waters and would negatively impact the native fish species. To test our hypothesis, we investigated the impact of the aquaculture facility on native fish diversity through a spatial design. Methods: The study was focused on assessing the impact of tilapia culture at sites nearer to the AIZ vs more distant sites, the former with a greater likelihood of receiving escapees. Two major sites were chosen; within 5 km (near-cage) and within 5-15 km (far-cage) radii from the AIZ. Fish sampling was conducted using multiple mesh sizes of gill nets (3.7, 5.1, 6.5, 7.6, and 10.2 cm) deployed at the littoral zone of the sampling points. Species diversity, abundance, dietary habits, and habitat preference were investigated. Results: The CPUE (individual/hour) of native fish species at the far-cage site of the AIZ Reservoir was found to be significantly higher (p < 0.05) than that at the near-cage site. Principal component analysis (PCA) based on diet and habitat preferences showed that the tilapia, O. niloticus had almost overlapping diet resources and habitat with native fish species. Conclusion: We conclude that there is a correlation between the reduced catches of native species (based on CPUE) and the high presence of tilapia. Thus, appropriate actions must be implemented for strategic and effective planning in terms of native fish conservation.

Dicamba (DIC) is one of the most applied auxin herbicides worldwide. Sublethal effects in the South American native fish Jenynsia lineata exposed to DIC concentrations close to environmental concentrations (0.03-30 µg/L) during 48 h were analysed thorough the evaluation of catalase (CAT), glutathione S-transferase (GST), superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities and malondialdehyde (MDA) and H2O2 levels for detecting potential oxidative stress. In gills MDA increased showing oxidative damage probably because of an inefficient antioxidant defense. This response evidenced the important role of gills as an organ of direct contact with waterborne contaminants. In addition, other changes in the biomarkers of oxidative stress were observed such as the inhibition of SOD activities in brain and the inhibition of GST in liver. These results show that short- term exposures to environmentally relevant concentrations of DIC could induce sublethal effects in native fish.

Poeciliids are widely recognized as successful invaders, possessing traits associated with invasion success. Native to Central America and south-eastern Mexico, the twospot livebearer (Pseudoxiphophorus bimaculatus) is a species recently recognized as invasive in both Central and northern Mexico. Despite its invasive status, limited research exists on its invasion process and the potential threats it poses to native species. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive review of the current knowledge on the twospot livebearer and mapped its current and potential distribution worldwide. The twospot livebearer shares similar traits with other successful invaders within the same family. Notably, it exhibits high fecundity throughout the year and demonstrates resilience to highly polluted and oxygen-deprived water conditions. This fish serves as a host for several parasites, including generalists, and has been extensively translocated for commercial purposes. Recently, it has also been used for biocontrol within its native range. Apart from existing outside its native range, the twospot livebearer, under current climate conditions and if transported there, could readily colonize biodiversity hotspots in tropical zones worldwide, including the Caribbean Islands, the Horn of Africa, North of Madagascar Island, south-eastern Brazil, and others located in southern and eastern Asia. Given that this fish is highly plastic and our Species Distribution Model, we consider that all areas with a habitat suitability >0.2 should prevent its arrival and establishment. Our findings underscore the urgent need to recognize this species as a threat to freshwater native topminnows and prevent its introduction and spread.

Abstract Artificial impoundments are frequently built to mitigate the water scarcity in the drylands such as the Caatinga region in Brazil. The São Francisco Interbasin Water Transfer (SF-IWT) megaproject implemented many artificial reservoirs for that purpose. A checklist of fish species from the SF-IWT reservoirs is provided based on samples from eight years of monitoring. The collections were conducted semiannually at 28 reservoirs divided into three groups: the East Axis, North Axis, and Agreste Branch. The SF-IWT reservoirs presented a total of 47 species, 46 were recorded in the North Axis, 27 in the East Axis, and only seven in the Agreste Branch. Characids and cichlids represented most of the species. The three analyzed groups of reservoirs presented distinct communities and the reservoirs' age, richness and abundance were relevant variables responsible for fish composition. The SF-IWT reservoirs present a diverse and heterogeneous ichthyofauna, typical of lentic environments. The main colonizers of the SF-IWT reservoirs were fish from the São Francisco donor basin, invasive species anthropically released in those sites, and eventual species from the surrounding receiving basins. As the accumulation curves suggested, a continuous effort could reveal additional species, patterns in long-term colonization, and contribute to data on the reservoirs' future stabilization phase. Since invasive species were present in most reservoirs, along with donor-basin native species with potential to disperse to the receiving basins, a continuous and detailed monitoring is key for management planning and possible impacts assessment.


Resumo Barramentos artificiais são comumente construídos para mitigar a escassez hídrica em áreas semiáridas como a região da Caatinga brasileira. O Projeto de Integração do Rio São Francisco (PISF) com Bacias Hidrográficas do Nordeste Setentrional implementou muitos reservatórios artificiais com este propósito. Uma lista de espécies de peixes dos reservatórios do PISF foi obtida após amostragens realizadas em oito anos de monitoramento. As campanhas foram realizadas semestralmente em 28 reservatórios divididos em três grupos: Eixo Leste, Eixo Norte e Ramal do Agreste. Os reservatórios amostrados apresentaram um total de 47 espécies, 46 delas foram registradas no Eixo Norte, 27 no Eixo Leste e apenas sete no Ramal do Agreste. Characidae e Cichlidae foram as famílias mais representativas. Os três grupos de reservatórios analisados apresentaram comunidades distintas e a idade, a riqueza e a abundância de cada reservatório foram as variáveis que mais influenciaram a composição das espécies de peixes. Os reservatórios do PISF apresentaram uma ictiofauna diversa e heterogênea, característica de ambientes lênticos. Os principais colonizadores dos reservatórios do PISF foram peixes da bacia doadora do São Francisco, espécies invasoras antropicamente liberadas nesses locais e eventuais espécies das bacias receptoras do entorno. De acordo com o resultado das curvas de acúmulo, um esforço contínuo poderia revelar espécies adicionais, padrões na colonização em longo prazo e contribuir com dados para a fase futura de estabilização dos reservatórios. Visto que espécies invasoras estiveram presentes em quase todos os reservatórios, juntamente com espécies nativas da bacia doadora com potencial de dispersão para as bacias receptoras, um monitoramento continuo e detalhado é essencial para o planejamento de manejo e avaliação de impactos.

Background: The Chinese section of the Irtysh River Basin and the Ulungur River Basin, two major river basins of the Altay region, are located at the northwest of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China. As an international river, the Chinese section has seven state-level protected fish and seven local-level protected species as well. Many more commercial species have been introduced from eastern China and other countries, accompanied by some low-value and small-sized fish in recent decades. The non-native fish species have already threatened these protected fish. This study investigated the distribution of non-native fish species in the Chinese section of the Irtysh River Basin and the Ulungur River Basin. The basic data for the biodiversity conservation and the information of the non-native fish in these two river basins were gathered. New information: There are a lot of studies on native fish in the Chinese section of the Irtysh River Basin and Urungur River Basin in China, but there is a lack of studies on non-native fish. Thirteen non-native fish belonging to four orders, nine families and 12 genera were collected in this study. The study includes one dataset. The dataset presents taxonomy, distribution, water body and location for each of the non-native fish collected from the Chinese section of the Irtysh River Basin and the Ulungur River Basin. Our study has found that the proportion of native species has declined, while the number of non-native species has increased from 2013 to 2022. The information we provided could help to develop an international strategy for the protection of aquatic biodiversity.

Due to the production of large quantities of electronic waste (e-waste), unsafe dismantling has caused serious pollution as well as toxicological impacts on both wildlife and humans. As an important aspect of physiology and health, the wildlife's gut microbiota and its changes induced by pollution have been recruiting increasing concerns. To reveal the gut microbiota-related ecotoxicology induced by e-waste dismantling, this study resolves the gut microbiota profile of Anabas testudineus, a native highly adapted nonmodel fish under the in situ exposure, and reveals whether and how the microbiota was altered. The comparisons are made by collecting samples from different e-waste polluted sites in Guiyu (a town in South China) and a nearby reference (nonpolluted) site. The overall gut microbiota landscape of A. testudineus is similar to that of other reported fishes, with an average of ∼300 OTUs, and constituted by Firmicutes (34.51%), Fusobacteria (29.16%) as the major phyla. Obviously different liver metal burdens/fingerprints were observed between the e-waste and reference sites. Accordingly, although the alpha-diversity (ACE, Simpson, and Shannon) of the gut microbiota did not significantly vary, a detailed exploration of the microbiota constitution indicated significant differences at various taxonomic levels, including a series of significantly different species and biomarkers, and showing site-specific beta-diversity clustering patterns. Interestingly, a few bacteria with greater abundance in the fish gut of e-waste polluted sites were also reported to present in other contaminated environments, have a role in wastewater treatment, be capable to transform metal, etc. Redundancy analysis (RDA) and Pearson association analyses indicated significant associations between Mn and Cetobacterium somerae (Pearson r = 0.3612, p = 0.0008) and between Pb and Clostridium colicanis (Pearson r = 0.5151, p < 0.0001). In summary, pollution from e-waste dismantling may have a role in altering the fish gut microbiota, and this research provides insights for better understanding e-waste ecotoxicology and improving future conservation.

Hepcidins are cysteine-rich peptides, which participate in iron metabolism regulation, the inflammatory and antimicrobial response. This study characterizes the hepcidin-1 (HAMP1) gene, its transcript expression in different tissues, as well as its regulation in a model of brain injury in Piaractus brachypomus. Bioinformatic analysis was carried out to determine conserved domains, glycosylation sites and protein structure of HAMP1, and probability that HAMP1 corresponds to an antimicrobial peptide (AMP). Relative gene expression of the P. brachypomus HAMP1 gene was determined by qPCR from cDNA of several tissues, a brain injury model, an organophosphate sublethal toxicity model and anesthetic experiment using the 2-ΔΔCt method. HAMP1 ORF encodes for a 91 aa pre-prohepcidin conformed for a prodomain with 42 aa and mature peptide of 25 aa. Mature domain was determined as an AMP. HAMP1 transcript is expressed in all the tissues, being higher in the spleen and liver. HAMP1 mRNA level was upregulated in the brain injury group, as well as in the olfactory bulb, optic chiasm and telencephalon of red-bellied pacu brain exposed to an organophosphate. In anesthetic experiment, HAMP1 mRNA level was upregulated in the liver and gills. HAMP1 gene of P. brachypomus may be involved in the inflammatory, antimicrobial, hypoxia and stress oxidative response.

Triclosan (TCS) is a synthetic broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent commonly used world-wide in a range of personal care and sanitizing products detected frequently in aquatic ecosystems. The aim of this study was to examine biochemical markers responses triggered by TCS in Danio rerio and in a native South American fish species (Corydoras paleatus). Further, an integrated approach comparing both test fish species was undertaken. These fish organisms were exposed to 100 or 189 µg TCS/L for 48 h. The activities of catalase (CAT), glutathione-s-transferase (GST), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and lipid peroxidation levels (LPO) and total antioxidant capacity against peroxyl radicals (ACAP) were determined in liver, gills, and brain. Acetylcholinesterase activity (AChE) was measured in the brain. Multivariate analysis showed that the most sensitive hepatic parameters were activities of GST and SOD for C. paleatus while LPO levels were for D. rerio. In gills the same parameters were responsive for C. paleatus but CAT in D. rerio. ACAP and GST activity were responsive parameters in brain of both species. Integrated biomarker responses (IBR) index demonstrated similar trends in both species suggesting this parameter might serve as a useful tool for quantification of integrated responses induced by TCS.

Our aim was to assess endoparasite diversity and liver alterations in Hoplerythrinus unitaeniatus (jeju) and Cichlasoma bimaculatum (acará preto) in a quilombola area in Maranhão, Brazil. For this, 21 H. unitaeniatus and 21 C. bimaculatum were caught in a natural environment and transported to a laboratory. After these had been euthanized, endoparasites were collected and identified. Liver alterations were evaluated histological analysis based on the severity of each lesion: stage I, organ functioning not compromised; stage II, more severe lesions that impair normal functioning of the organs; and stage III, very severe and irreversible lesions. Among the fish evaluated, 71.43% H. unitaeniatus and 61.90% C. bimaculatum were parasitized. Contracaecum sp. was found in both species; while acanthocephalans, only in H. unitaeniatus. The alterations were vacuolization, nucleus in the cell periphery, deformation of the cell outline, melanomacrophage center, hyperemia, cytoplasmic degeneration and nuclear vacuolization. Through calculating a histological alteration index, it was found that 26.19% of the specimens presented lesions in stage I; 38.09% lesions in stage II and 9.52% lesions in stage III. It was concluded that there is high prevalence of Contracaecum sp. and that the liver lesions may be adaptive responses by the fish to endoparasitic infection.(AU)


Objetivou-se avaliar a diversidade de endoparasitos e alterações hepáticas em Hoplerythrinus unitaeniatus (jeju) e Cichlasoma bimaculatum (acará preto) de área quilombola maranhense, Brasil. Assim, 21 H. unitaeniatus e 21 C. bimaculatum foram capturados de ambiente alagável e transportados vivos ao laboratório. Após a eutanásia, procedeu-se à coleta, identificação de endoparasitos e avaliação de alterações hepáticas por meio de análise histológica, baseada na severidade das lesões: (i) alterações de estágio I, não comprometem o funcionamento dos órgãos; (ii) estágio II, lesões mais severas que prejudicam o funcionamento normal dos órgãos; (iii) estágio III, lesões muito severas e irreversíveis. Dos peixes avaliados, 71,43% H. unitaeniatus e 61,90% C. bimaculatum estavam parasitados. Contracaecum sp. foi encontrado nas duas espécies e acantocéfalos apenas em H. unitaeniatus. As alterações hepáticas foram vacuolização, núcleo na periferia das células, deformação do contorno celular, centro de melanomacrófagos, hiperemia, degeneração citoplasmática e vacuolização nuclear. Com o cálculo do índice das alterações, constatou-se que 26,19% dos exemplares apresentaram alterações de estágio I; 38,09% de estágio II e 9,52% de estágio III com a constatação de larvas de Contracaecum sp. encistadas no fígado. Conclui-se que existe alta prevalência de Contracaecum sp., e lesões hepáticas podem ser respostas adaptativas dos peixes à infecção endoparasitária.(AU)

The increasing frequency and severity of drought may exacerbate ongoing global amphibian declines. However, interactions between drought and coincident stressors, coupled with high interannual variability in amphibian abundances, can mask the extent and underlying mechanisms of drought impacts. We synthesized a decade (2009 - 2019) of regional-scale amphibian monitoring data (2273 surveys, 233 ponds, and seven species) from across California's Bay Area and used dynamic occupancy modeling to estimate trends and drivers of species occupancy. An extreme drought during the study period resulted in substantial habitat loss, with 51% of ponds drying in the worst year of drought, compared to <20% in pre-drought years. Nearly every species exhibited reduced breeding activity during the drought, with the occupancy of some species (American bullfrogs and California newts) declining by >25%. Invasive fishes and bullfrogs were also associated with reduced amphibian occupancy, and these taxa were locally extirpated from numerous sites during drought, without subsequent recovery-suggesting that drought may present an opportunity to remove invaders. Despite a historic, multi-year drought, native amphibians rebounded quickly to pre-drought occupancy levels, demonstrating evidence of resilience. Permanent waterbodies supported higher persistence of native species during drought years than did temporary waterbodies, and we therefore highlight the value of hydroperiod diversity in promoting amphibian stability.

This study used an experimental approach to compare the passage success of native and exotic fish species from the temperate Southern Hemisphere over an artificial baffled fish ramp designed for overcoming low-head (≤1.0 m) fish migration barriers. Passage efficiency was, on average, lower for the exotic species [koi carp (Cyprinus carpio), rudd (Scardinius erythrophthalmus) and rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)] compared to the native species [inanga (Galaxias maculatus), redfin bully (Gobiomorphus huttoni) and common bully (Gobiomorphus cotidianus)]. Nonetheless, there was considerable variation between individual species, with rainbow trout outperforming common bully and juvenile inanga, but koi carp and rudd failing to pass any of the ramps. The differences in predicted probability of passage success between the native and exotic fish species in this study were sufficient in some cases to indicate the potential for the baffled fish ramps to operate as a selective migration barrier. Nonetheless, further testing is required to validate these results across a broader range of conditions before deployment.

Understanding how and why the size of populations varies is critical knowledge for conservation and management. While considerable work has explored how different demographic parameters affect population growth, less is known the drivers of variability in these parameters. Long-term time series tracking population size that are coupled with empirical data to examine the relative importance of different drivers are rare, especially in freshwater systems. Even rarer are studies that collect this information concurrently from multiple species with contrasting life history strategies in the same system to assess whether population size and the relative importance of drivers also vary. We studied changes in the abundance and size structure of four native freshwater fish species in the Murray River, southeastern Australia, over a continuous 19-yr period. Two species with traits typical of "equilibrium" species (Murray cod Maccullochella peelii and trout cod Maccullochella macquariensis) and two with traits of "periodic" species (golden perch Macquaria ambigua and silver perch Bidyanus bidyanus) were sampled annually and capture-mark-recapture modeling was used to ask (1) how did population size change during this period, (2) how were changes in population size related to variability in hydrology, and (3) how were changes in population size driven by different processes (local recruitment or migration events)? Populations of all four species varied throughout the study, and our results are consistent with the notion that local recruitment is an important driver of this variability for Murray cod and trout cod, whereas immigration is more important for the two other species. Increases in spring river discharge strongly influenced these responses for trout cod and golden perch. Our study provides fundamental insights into the population dynamics of these valued species, and how management strategies might differ based on their life histories. Management should focus on allowing connectivity for golden and silver perch, and on promoting local scale recruitment and survival for Murray cod and trout cod. More generally, our study highlights the importance of understanding the processes underpinning population persistence, how these processes may vary for different species, and ultimately how this knowledge can inform targeted management actions.

Industrial wastewaters and urban discharges contain complex mixtures of chemicals capable of impacting reproductive performance in freshwater fish, called endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs). In Chile, the issue was highlighted by our group beginning over 15 years ago, by analyzing the impacts of pulp and paper mill effluents (PPME) in the Biobio, Itata, and Cruces River basins. All of the rivers studied are important freshwater ecosystems located in the Mediterranean region of Central Chile, each with a unique fish biodiversity. Sequentially, we developed a strategy based on laboratory assays, semicontrolled-field experiments (e.g., caging) and wild fish population assessments to explore the issue of reproductive impacts on both introduced and native fish in Chile. The integration of watershed, field, and laboratory studies was effective at understanding the endocrine responses in Chilean freshwater systems. The studies demonstrated that regardless of the type of treatment, pulp mill effluents can contain compounds capable of impacting endocrine systems. Urban wastewater treatment plant effluents (WWTP) were also investigated using the same integrated strategy. Although not directly compared, PPME and WWTP effluent seem to cause similar estrogenic effects in fish after waterborne exposure, with differing intensities. This body of work underscores the urgent need for further studies on the basic biology of Chilean native fish species, and an improved understanding on reproductive development and variability across Chilean ecosystems. The lack of knowledge of the ontogeny of Chilean fish, especially maturation and sexual development, with an emphasis on associated habitats and landscapes, are impediment factors for their conservation and protection against the threat of EDCs. The assessment of effects on native species in the receiving environment is critical for supporting and designing protective regulations and remediation strategies, and for conserving the unique Chilean fish biodiversity.

Tambaqui Colossoma macropomum is the most cultivated native fish in South America and Aeromonas hydrophila is one of the main bacteria infecting tropical fish. Despite the economic importance of this round fish, to date, there has been a paucity of investigations into haematological changes in tambaqui. In this study, detailed blood analyses (0 h, 6 h, 24 h, 7 d and 14 d) following intraperitoneal challenge with A. hydrophila were performed. After analysing the results, there was a suspicion of a novel cell death mechanism via extracellular traps (ETosis) in tambaqui. The search for ETosis was based on differential interference contrast (DIC) microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) assays through application of an adapted protocol applying co-incubation of leukocytes with A. hydrophila. The cells were investigated at: 0 h (control), 4 h and 7 h after incubation. The complete haemogram profile showed an uncommon severe leukopenia in early phases of infection (6 h, p < 0.001 and ≤ 0.05), due to significant decreases in the three main leukocytes: lymphocytes (6 h, p ≤ 0.001), monocytes (6 h, p ≤ 0.05) and neutrophils (6 h and 24 h, p ≤ 0.01 and p ≤ 0.05). Leucocytosis and lymphocytosis (p ≤ 0.01) were ascertained only 7 days post-infection. Through DIC and SEM, we discovered that leukocyte suicide exposed the nuclear contents between 4 and 7 h after stimuli with bacteria. The leukogram profile associated with DIC and SEM analyses suggested that tambaqui leukocytes underwent a programmed death (ETosis) in order to expose chromatin and granule proteins as a trap to bind and then kill bacteria; thus, preventing A. hydrophila from spreading and resulting in leukopenia during the early phase of bacterial infection. In this paper, we presume that ETosis is one of the last resources for tambaqui to contain the infection, and after this leukocyte strategy, a high number of phagocytic cells are produced and released into the peripheral circulation.

Biological invasions are leading several species to extinction and are projected as a main driver of biodiversity changes in lakes for this century. However, the knowledge of their impacts on the Neotropical ichthyofauna over time remains largely incipient, especially when considering the functional diversity of native communities. Here we aim to identify the effects of non-native species, especially the non-native piscivorous Cichla kelberi and Pygocentrus nattereri, on the functional diversity of the native ichthyofauna of the Carioca Lake, Middle Rio Doce basin, state of Minas Gerais. Using fish occurrence data for eight years from 1983 to 2010 combined with an ecomorphological-trait analysis, we found that while the native species richness dropped to 56%, the functional richness is only 27% of that found before introductions. In other words, more than species, the ichthyofauna suffered an impressive decline in the range of functional traits, which can further have severe impacts on ecological processes within that system. When considering all the components of the current ichthyofauna (native and non-native species), neither taxonomic nor functional richness have changed over time. However, even keeping biodiversity levels, non-native species are not able to fully compensate for the extinct native ones in terms of functions.(AU)


Invasões biológicas vêm levando várias espécies à extinção, sendo projetado como o principal causador de mudanças na biodiversidade em lagos neste século. Entretanto, o conhecimento dos impactos sobre a ictiofauna Neotropical ao longo do tempo permanece bastante incipiente, especialmente quando se considera a diversidade funcional de comunidades nativas. Neste estudo, nós procuramos identificar os efeitos das espécies não nativas, especialmente os piscívoros não nativos Cichla kelberi and Pygocentrus nattereri, sobre a diversidade funcional da ictiofauna da Lagoa Carioca, bacia do médio rio Doce, Minas Gerais. Utilizando dados de ocorrência de oito anos entre 1983 e 2010, combinados a uma análise de atributos ecomorfológicos, observamos que a riqueza de espécies decaiu a 56%, enquanto a riqueza funcional é de apenas 27% da encontrada antes das introduções. Ou seja, mais do que espécies, a ictiofauna sofreu um declínio significativo na amplitude de atributos funcionais, o que pode levar a impactos severos em processos ecológicos neste sistema. Ao considerar todos os componentes da ictiofauna atual (espécies nativas e não nativas), as métricas de riqueza não sofreram alterações ao longo do tempo. Entretanto, mesmo mantendo os níveis de biodiversidade, espécies não nativas não são capazes de compensar totalmente as espécies nativas extintas em termos funcionais.(AU)
